Getting started

Setup guide

From bare board to smart home in four steps.

HomeHome.App firmware runs on common ESP32 and ESP8266 boards. You buy the board in your own country, install the firmware from your browser in about two minutes, and switch it on with Maker Credits.

Step 1

Pick your device and board

Each HomeHome.App device runs on one kind of board. Find your project below: it shows what to buy, which flasher to open and how many Maker Credits it uses.

You need at least 10 Maker Credits in total – from USD 5.00 a month. Not sure which board you have? Ask us on WhatsApp before you buy.

What else you need

A USB data cable

Some cables only charge. If your computer does not see the board, try another cable first.

Chrome or Edge on a computer

Windows, macOS or Linux. Flashing uses Web Serial – phones, tablets, Safari and Firefox cannot flash a board.

A 5 V power supply

A USB charger with at least 1 A – the board stays on all the time. NodeMCU base boards also take 12 V on their DC jack.

2.4 GHz Wi-Fi

The boards do not join 5 GHz networks. Keep the device within range of your router.

Apple Home

An iPhone or iPad with the Home app. For the Bridge and for control away from home: an Apple TV or HomePod as home hub.

Buying tips. ESP32 boards: check for an ESP32-WROOM-32 or -32D module with the built-in antenna. NodeMCU: choose the LoLin V3 with the CH340G USB chip. We do not sell hardware – any shop in your country that has the exact board is fine.

Step 2

Install the firmware from your browser

About two minutes. Nothing to download or install on your computer – open the flasher for your board and click Install. Prefer a one-page checklist? See the Install guide.

  1. Plug in. Connect the board to your computer with a USB data cable.
  2. Open the flasher for your board (above) in Chrome or Edge.
  3. Click Connect and pick your board's port in the list that pops up.
  4. Click Install and wait until it says it is done – 1 to 2 minutes.
  5. Unplug it and plug it in again. The board now starts its own setup Wi-Fi.

Stuck on "Connecting…"? Hold the BOOT button on the board while it connects, then let go. On some boards: hold BOOT, plug in the USB cable, then release it.

Step 3

Connect it and add it to Apple Home

  1. Join the setup Wi-Fi from your phone: HomeHome-XXXXXX (the Bridge shows HomeHome.App). Password: homehome.
  2. Fill in the setup page. It opens by itself – if not, reconnect. Choose your device type, type your Gmail address, then pick your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and enter its password. Each device page names the exact device type.
  3. Bridge only: sign up at bridge.homehome.app with the same email address and link your eWeLink account. Then restart the Bridge and wait 1–2 minutes. You can try it free for 24 hours in demo mode.
  4. Add it in the Home app. Tap +, then enter the code 111-88-111. Code refused? Unplug the board, plug it in again and try within 90 seconds.

Step 4

Switch it on with Maker Credits

Try it free first. Installing the firmware is free, and every device starts in demo mode by itself after setup – the Bridge for 24 hours, other devices usually for 10 to 20 on/off changes, depending on the device. Buy Maker Credits only when you like it. When we have added them to your Gmail account, restart the device and it keeps working.

The firmware is free to install. Maker Credits keep it running: each device uses a set number of credits, and your credits are linked to your Gmail address.

1

Count your credits

Add up what your devices use. The full table is on the Maker Credits page.

2

Choose a plan

Monthly: USD 0.50 per credit. Yearly: USD 5.00 per credit – 2 months free. 10 to 500 credits.

3

Add your Gmail

At checkout, write the Gmail address you used in the setup in the order note.

4

We switch it on

We add the credits to your Gmail account and the device starts working. See your devices at smart.homehome.app.

Troubleshooting

Something not working?

My board is not in the port list
Try another USB cable – it must carry data, not only charge – or another USB port. Still nothing? Install the USB driver for the chip printed next to the USB socket: CP210x or CH340.
The flasher stays on "Connecting…"
Hold the BOOT (or FLASH) button on the board while it connects, then let go. On some boards: hold BOOT, plug in the USB cable, then release it.
I cannot flash from my phone, Safari or Firefox
Flashing needs Web Serial. Use Chrome or Edge on a Windows, macOS or Linux computer.
The setup Wi-Fi does not appear
Unplug the board, wait 5 seconds and plug it in again. Stand 1–2 metres from it with your phone.
The setup page does not open
Disconnect from the HomeHome Wi-Fi and join it again – the page opens by itself.
"Setup code incorrect" in the Home app
Unplug the board, plug it in again and add it within 90 seconds. The code is 111-88-111.
It keeps dropping off Wi-Fi
Use 2.4 GHz and give your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks different names (for example "MyHome" and "MyHome5"). On a mesh network keep the device on the same access point. Keep the device and your Apple TV on the same network, and use only one home hub.
How do I update the firmware later?
You flash only once. Later updates install over Wi-Fi: type the device's IP address into a browser and install the update from its page. For the Bridge, open bridge.homehome.app, find the Bridge's IP address, click Update and upload the file.
